Place for kids and parents to become creative

reading1.jpgChildren who read for pleasure become lifelong readers. This advice for parents describes how to instill in children a love for books. Helping your children to enjoy reading is one of the most important things you can do as a parent and well worth the investment of your time and energy. Kids will learn reading skills in school, but often they come to associate reading with work, not pleasure. As a result, they lose their desire to read. And it is that desire – the curiosity and interest – that is the cornerstone to using reading and related skills successfully.

Story Telling
Story telling is one of the many ways to get and encourage your children to love books. If we often read them story and have they tell their own story, I believe they will start to love books.

Read Aloud
You may try this way, but make sure when you read aloud you should adjust your voice tone according to the passage you will read, just read aloud it will not help, but with the right tone may get your children attention to your reading. Have your children read aloud to all the family members too.

Use a variety of aids to help your children
To help your children improve their reading, use textbooks, computer programs, books-on-tape, and other materials available in stores. Games are especially good choices because they let children have fun as they work on their skills.
Books around your home
Always place books, magazine, or even newspaper around your home in the rooms or places which are easily for your kids to reach.
Family reading time
Always set a time when all the family members at home read together for about 20 minutes silently.
Develop the library habit
Entice your children to read more by taking them to the library every few weeks to get new reading materials. The library also offers reading programs for children of all ages that may appeal to your children and further increase their interest in reading

What else can we raise our children to be better readers?
We must be patient, listen to their innocent questions, and pay attention to their funny comments. It helps to remember that answering our children’s questions is one of the best ways we can help them to discover the wide world around them.

We must also limit their television watching, video (and other games) playing, and even the time that they spend on the computer so as to increase their reading time. It is a fact that many children struggle with reading problems because of the many distractions in their lives. And, if we identify reading problems in our children, we must not give up on them - we must try to find the cause of the problem. Other potential sources are poor language development, and vision and hearing problems.

It is also important to have a variety of books at home, and to utilize the library’s wealth of reading materials. Access to good and diverse stories encourages a love for reading.

We are the best examples for our children; they follow what we do more so than what we say, so if we want them to love reading, we need first to read ourselves. We must remember too that it is important to keep encouraging them, no matter how long or how much effort it takes. Hopefully our efforts will lead to their success
